For a generation of Alameda park rats, Chris Speier was the name that invoked legend and the dream of playing in the Bigs. This post will grow as we capture the early story of “The Alameda Rifle.”
Early Days
The Speier family lived on San Antonio Avenue, directly across the street from Franklin Park. It’s no wonder that with Chris and his younger brother Billy looking out on the Eagles diamond every day they would both turn out to be stars for the Eagles

Under the guidance of ARPD park director, Bob Howard, Speier was a star on the Franklin Eagles 1963 Little Coast League Champions.

In 1968, AHS Coach Leroy Bernadue had two future professional players in Chris Speier and Mel Arnerich (top row third and fourth from left), plus a gaggle of talented players like perennial Krusi Colts star Ron Coffman (bottom row – third from right)

Not long after his senior photo was taken, Chris Speier would be on his way to play for UC Santa Barbara Gauchos (1968-1969).
