On a warm summer afternoon in 1975, these two Little Coast players are doing their utmost to turn the call their way. Godfrey Gopher first baseman, Gary Silverman, is stretching to take the throw while the Pirate’s Rodney Rodriguez stretches for the bag.
Note the Washington Park stands in the background. You’ll see some parents enjoying the action. This was a fairly uncommon occurrence back then. Unlike many baseball leagues today, parents played a largely silent role in the ARPD program.
Kids rode their bikes to the park and often peddled to away-games on their own in a group. The games were scheduled during the week when most parents were at work. More than a few kids I know sometimes wish that were the case today!
