Just three years removed from the lineup of the Alameda High School Hornet varsity baseball team, Chris Speier was the starting SS for the San Francisco Giants. Shown here at Spring Training for his rookie campaign in 1971, the former Franklin Eagle would play in the NL Championship Series that year, hitting a home run in Game 4 against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
“The Alameda Rifle” would return to Franklin Park from time to time. One such visit included fellow Giants infielder Chris Arnold. The two dazzled young ballplayers with a game of “burnout” in which the major leaguers would play catch with ever increasing velocity on their return throws. Tom Lyons recalls Franklin regular Brian Cary as one unfortunate victim of Speier’s attention for another round of burnout!
